The year was 1963. Color TV is broadcasted via satellite transmission for the first time ever. Dr. Martin Luther King delivers his famous “I Have a Dream” speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Johnny Cash records “Ring Of Fire.” In November of that year, President Kennedy was assassinated while traveling to Dallas, Texas.

At the Harley-Davidson company, meanwhile, the very first golf carts ever manufactured by that company started rolling off of the production lines. The very first Harley Davidson golf carts resembled very large tricycles - sporting 3 wheels (1 the front, 2 in the back). Later on Harley Davidson golf carts appeared in 4-wheeled models; then in 1969 manufacturing was taken over by the AMF company. The production of these carts in time passed on to other companies, but Harley Davidson golf carts are still in service today, with many enthusiastic fans! Many lovers of Harley Davidson golf carts lovingly repair them, keeping them in tip-top working order (and yes, parts - and even owners manuals - are still available for purchase).

Harley Davidson golf carts were originally sold in two types of models: electric and gas-operated. The earliest models were electric and gas. Electric Harley Davidson golf carts were sold from the years 1963 to 1982. Gas model Harley Davidson golf carts were sold from 1963 to 1985.

Care And Maintenance Of Your Harley Davidson Golf Cart

Because Harley Davidson golf carts are considered classics, if you have one naturally you want to keep it in good shape. Part of this process is to make sure that you store your Harley Davidson golf cart properly for the season. Here’s an important tip: If you do some preventative maintenance on your golf cart BEFORE you put it into storage, you will find it will work better when the warm weather comes around next year!

If you have one of the electric models of Harley Davidson golf carts, then you will first have to clean the battery and battery rack, and then remove the battery for storage (follow your owner’s manual). A thorough cleaning (and repainting where necessary) is good to do at this time. Some owners like to put their cart up on blocks. Of course, it’s best to store your Harley Davidson golf cart inside during the colder and wetter months.

On the other hand, if you have a gas-powered Harley Davidson golf cart, then you will need to begin by cleaning the entire engine area and battery storage rack. This is a good time to look over your engine carefully for any signs of wear and tear. If necessary replace the air filter, change the oil and make any other necessary engine repairs to your Harley Davidson golf cart. Again, some owners like to put their cart up onto blocks, and the best storage from inclement, violent winter weather is indoors.
